Astrology: The most fascinating and difficult "science" mentioned here is astrology, about which I cannot personally confirm an interesting metaphor. Indrajit's birth One of the most courageous warrior sons of Ravana, Indrajit is a major player in Indian epic Ramayana. At the time Indrajit's birth, Ravana had urged all the seers for the most lucky arrangement of the planets in the celestial zodiac. Following advice from the seers, Ravana commanded all the planets to be positioned exactly at the points in the celestial zodiac. Ravana therefore wanted to act like God. God Almighty, destined otherwise. Sani thus only slightly stretched his leg at the precise moment to adjust the arrangement of the planets. Sani turned into a limping planet from that moment when Ravana struck her leg with his great mace. But the damage has been done. Almost all society has many such fables meant to underline the unchangeable character of fate and God's general will. Astrology provides just certain direction and probability; it does not subscribe to any certainty in its study. Another "story" that is sometimes used to underline the pointlessness of using astrology to correct any lucky event is Allow me to copy exactly that "story," which I wrote as a comment. "The famous mathematician and astrologer Bhaskaracharya produced Leelavathi, a daughter. Once she turned marriageable age, he searched for a suitable mate and set the wedding date using the horoscopes of the boy and Leelavathi. Bhaskaracharya was definitely a brilliant mathematician and astrologer as well as a revered guru. He realized, indeed, what destiny was. The great sage cast her birth chart at Leelavathi's birth, and to his great dismay he could plainly foretell his daughter's early widowhood. Now, what could the wise man do except embrace the fate? The sage was driven by his parental impulses to search for the most favorable moment for Leelavathi's marriage so that the Acharya would have thought the auspicious timing would prevent the widowhood for his beautiful child. Now add the original "story" making rounds, to the above paragraph. The Acharya also, for a minute was blinded by the parental love and played God. The story's continuity and logic become increasingly important. It is absurd to think that the Acharya might not have created the birth chart and searched exclusively for the most favorable period for the daughter's marriage. When we try to grasp the science of astrology, I strongly believe we are all like those blind guys touching the several sections of an elephant and trying to provide each individual's interpretation of the elephant. We might come out trumps with regard to a moment or just one facet of the subject. To really grasp the science, nevertheless, we must become "MASTER". "The main purposes of Jyothisha Sastra are to determine the longevity, joys and sorrows of the people, but since the movements of the planets are so subtle, even sages like Vasishta and Brihaspati, have not been able to be quite definite in this aspect," the venerable Maharshi Parasara says in the introduction part to Ashtakavarga Chapter (Chapter 66).
